The beginning of 2018 has shown a mixture of different seasons in the first of the year. What is going on? It has been sunny, but chilly. A mixture of rain, hot clear days, and low temperatures that finally bring snow to the state. It is rare that colleges cancel classes right away, but that has been the case as students’ 3-day weekend turned into a 5-day weekend.
On Friday, January 12, classes canceled due to the threat of winter weather bringing snow and ice making it unsafe to travel to campus. Well, we might have over guessed it. #gallery-1081-2 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1081-2 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-1081-2 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1081-2 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
So, it didn’t turn out how anyone hoped it would. I even made a quick trip to Wal-Mart that very same day and the roads were fine. Even though the snow didn’t stick around for long, the freezing temperatures stayed. As the weekend went on the temperatures started to rise to the high 40’s by Monday. But, that cool yet chilly weather wasn’t going to stick around for the rest of the week.
Later that night, I checked my Weather App and a Winter Advisory was starting on Tuesday at 3AM. Yes, there was snow possible and low temperatures. Being from Alabama, I highly doubted that I would wake up to a winter wonderland with snow still blowing around outside my door.
Fast forward to this morning, the second time I woke up, I finally checked my phone. My mom texted: It’s so pretty here! Have a good day and stay warm! I am in a different city, but I knew there was snow here, too. I rolled out of bed and immediately opened the door. I was blown away by how pretty the snow looked even at 11 something in the morning. The parking lot of my apartment complex was a blanket of white.
The first picture of many this morning!
The fun didn’t end there. I stepped back into my apartment and got out my digital camera. I needed to practice and I could still wear gloves while taking pictures.
I was only out for a couple of minutes because I was freezing while handling a camera and walking in the snow. I thought I might bust my butt along with my new camera…thankfully I was wrong. I quickly took a lot of photos and ran back in to switch to my phone camera so I could, yes, take a selfie in the snow!
Taken literally 20 minutes after I woke up!
The fun didn’t stop there. One of my guy friends had to go to work this morning. Well, he got there early for his shift and went back out exploring. The view is beautiful. These are shots from Toney, AL by Nick.
This isn’t a typical post by me, but I wanted to share my snow day with you! I love these rare days because in Alabama we never know if we will get snow or it will miss us completely. Stay warm out there. College kids, catch up on some sleep, listen to music, watch that movie you’ve been meaning to watch, and just enjoy your snow day!
